Biography of Johann Melchior Dinglinger
Johann Melchior Dinglinger, a renowned German jeweler, was born on December 26, 1664, into a family of jewelers and had a strong interest in the family trade from an early age. As he grew up, Johann took over the family legacy and opened his own workshop in Dresden. His brothers and sons also worked alongside him there.
In 1698, Dinglinger had already become a celebrated master and was invited to the court of Augustus the Strong, where he served as a jeweler. From this time on, Johann Melchior created his masterpieces in the baroque style for the Saxon elector. His craftsmanship was distinguished by a refined style of production, meticulous attention to detail, and the combination of various metals, gemstones, enamel, and bone. The jeweler gained fame beyond the borders of Germany, with even Peter the Great stopping to visit him in 1712. The Russian Tsar, disregarding court etiquette, sought to meet Dinglinger during his European travels.
To this day, the master's jewelry treasures can be seen in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Dresden. Among his most famous works are the coffee service executed in the ancient Egyptian style called the "Apis Temple" and a cartouche with a portrait of Augustus the Strong on a medallion. However, his most renowned work is the "Court Reception in Delhi on the Birthday of the Great Mughal Aurangzeb," which measures about half a meter in height and just under one and a half meters in length. Dinglinger worked on this piece for seven years for Augustus the Strong.
Johann Melchior Dinglinger passed away in 1731, although the exact date of his death is unknown.
