Biography of Johanna Winkel

Johanna Winkel is a German soprano singer who has gained recognition for her talent and remarkable vocal abilities. She began her musical journey at a young age, learning to play the piano and cello. In school, Winkel performed in local orchestras and sang in the Westphalian Chamber Choir under the direction of Rainer Winkel.

In 2001, Winkel started her professional career, performing in various concerts and recording with the Cologne Chamber Choir. From 2002 to 2004, she worked with the Stuttgart Chamber Choir, conducted by Frieder Bernius. During this time, Winkel also studied vocal music at the Detmold University of Music under the guidance of Mechthild Böhme and later Caroline Thomas.

Throughout her career, Winkel has attended masterclasses by renowned artists such as Christa Ludwig, Christina Scheppelmann, the King's Singers, Ralf Popken, and the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music. Her exceptional vocal qualities have helped her win several prestigious singing competitions. In 2005, she received a scholarship from the Richard Wagner Foundation for her outstanding talent.

Winkel has performed in various productions, including at the Landestheater Detmold, where she played the roles of Mimi in Puccini's "La Boheme" and Donna Elvira in Mozart's "Don Giovanni." In the 2006-2007 season, she was a guest star at the Detmold Theatre. In 2008, Winkel defended her diploma project by taking on the role of Micaela in Bizet's "Carmen."

In addition to her stage performances, Winkel has achieved success in vocal competitions. She was a finalist in the National Singing Competition in Berlin in 2006 and received an NRW prize in 2007. At the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna, she reached the semi-finals. In 2009, Winkel won the first prize at the international vocal competition "Cantilena" in Bayreuth.

In 2011, Winkel participated in the Operalia competition, showcasing her talent to a global audience. Her remarkable voice and accomplishments have established her as one of the prominent sopranos in the contemporary music scene.
