Founder and Director of Boston Scientific

John Abel is currently a well-known American businessman, best known as the founder and director of the medical company "Boston Scientific".

Early Life and Education

John Abel was born in 1936 in the United States. He grew up in a military family, with his father, Mannerth Lincoln Abel, serving as the commander of the submarine "USS Grunion", which went missing on July 31, 1942. The government believes that it was captured by enemy forces while conducting research in the Bering Sea. Abel obtained his higher education at Amherst College, where he began contemplating the idea of starting his own business.

Founding Boston Scientific

Together with Peter Nicholas, John Abel founded the company "Boston Scientific". Abel also serves as the chairman of the board of directors of "FIRST". Boston Scientific is a leading global developer, manufacturer, and supplier of medical devices used in various medical fields such as cardiology, electrophysiology, peripheral interventions, neuromodulation, neurovascular interventions, heart surgery, endoscopy, oncology, urology, and gynecology.

Success and Challenges

Boston Scientific gained wide recognition for its intravascular ultrasound imaging and the specially designed "stent" used in the procedure. However, this product was later banned, resulting in approximately $431 million in losses for the company. Despite this setback, Boston Scientific's products remain popular among healthcare institutions worldwide due to their high quality and affordability.

Competition and Expansion

The main competitors of Boston Scientific are medical giants such as Medtronic and Johnson & Johnson. Recently, John Abel acquired the competing company "Guidant" in a deal worth $27 billion. The company underwent restructuring, resulting in two separate entities: "BSC" and "Abbott Laboratories". Currently, John Abel resides with his family in his residence in Shelburne, Vermont. He has three children, and his net worth as of 2008 is estimated at $1.5 billion.
