Biography of John Illsley

John Illsley is a British musician and bass guitarist, best known for being a member of the rock band 'Dire Straits'. He has received numerous awards, including a Grammy and a Brit Award.

Early Life and Education

John Illsley was born on June 24, 1949, in Leicester, England. He attended Bromsgrove School in Worcestershire, one of the oldest and best schools in England. After completing college near Kettering, Illsley interned at a woodworking company. He then studied sociology at the University of London and opened a music store with his girlfriend.

Formation of Dire Straits

While living in London, John Illsley shared a house with David Knopfler and soon met his older brother, Mark Knopfler. David wanted to form his own band, and Illsley joined as the bassist. Mark became the lead vocalist and second guitarist, while their friend Pick Withers played the drums. They chose the name 'Dire Straits' and worked hard to become popular. Their efforts paid off, and the band achieved great success.

Contributions to Dire Straits

Throughout their career, John Illsley played bass guitar, contributed backing vocals, and occasionally sang lead vocals alongside Mark. During the recording of their third album, 'Making Movies', tensions arose between the Knopfler brothers due to constant recording, touring, and public scrutiny. David left the band due to creative differences with his brother, causing Illsley to lose both a bandmate and a close friend.

Post-Dire Straits Career

John Illsley and Mark Knopfler were the only two members who remained with Dire Straits from 1977 until its disbandment in 1995. Illsley attempted to convince Knopfler to reunite the band in October 2008, but was unsuccessful. He released two albums in collaboration with Knopfler, 'Never Told A Soul' in 1984 and 'Glass' in 1988. Recently, Illsley has released two more albums influenced by the Celtic music group 'Cunla'.

John Illsley currently resides in Hampshire, England, with his second wife Stephanie and their four children. He owns a local pub called 'East End Arms', which has been listed as one of the '50 Best Pubs in Britain'. He also has stakes in two local hotels, 'The Master Builder's House Hotel' near Beaulieu and 'The George Hotel' on the Isle of Wight. Apart from music, which has been his lifelong dedication, Illsley is passionate about painting. In fact, he had his first exhibition at the 'Nevill Keating McIlroy' gallery in London in 2007.
