Jean de Bourgogne, Seigneur de Charolais et de Bourbon
Early Life and MarriageJean de Bourgogne was born as the second son of Duke Hugh IV of Burgundy and Yolande de Dreux. In 1248, on the eve of the Seventh Crusade, Jean married Agnes of Bourbon-Dampierre, daughter of Archambault IX, Lord of Bourbon.
Lordship of Charolais
As part of his son's marriage, Duke Hugh IV granted Jean a portion of the former County of Chalon, which became known as the Lordship of Charolais. Additionally, Jean acquired the castellanies of Sauvement, Donzy, Mont-Saint-Vincent, and Sanvin.
Co-Lord of Bourbon
In 1262, Agnes inherited the Lordship of Bourbon after the death of her sister. Jean became her co-ruler, sharing responsibility for the administration of Bourbon.
Death and Legacy
Jean de Bourgogne died on September 17, 1267. He was succeeded by his only daughter, Beatrice.
Marriage and Children
Jean de Bourgogne married Agnes of Bourbon-Dampierre in February 1248. Together, they had one child:
Beatrice (1257-1310): Lady of Bourbon and Countess of Charolais after her father's death; married Robert of France, Count of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis
