John Carney: A Distinguished Career in Public Service
Early Life and EducationJohn Carney was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and graduated from St. Mark's High School in 1974. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College in 1978 and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Delaware in 1987.
Early Political Career
Carney began his political career in 1986, working as staff assistant to U.S. Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware. He subsequently held various positions in the New Castle County government (1989-1994) and the administration of Delaware Governor Thomas Carper (1994-1997).
Financial Secretary of Delaware and Lieutenant Governor
From 1997 to 2000, Carney served as Delaware's Financial Secretary of State. He was elected Lieutenant Governor under Governor Ruth Ann Minner in 2001, serving in that role until 2009.
Congressman and Gubernatorial Campaign
In 2010, Carney was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Delaware's at-large congressional district. He unsuccessfully ran as the Democratic nominee for governor in 2008, losing to Jack Markell in the primary.
Governor of Delaware
On November 8, 2016, Carney was elected Governor of Delaware, defeating Republican State Senator Colin Bonini. He took office on January 17, 2017, and is currently serving his second term.
