John Middleton Clayton
Early Life and EducationJohn Middleton Clayton was an American politician who served as the 23rd Secretary of State from 1849 to 1850.
Clayton was born in Dagsboro, Delaware, on July 24, 1796. He attended Yale University and graduated in 1815.
Legal and Political Career
Clayton began his legal practice in 1819. He served as a member of the Delaware House of Representatives from 1824 to 1826 and as Secretary of State of Delaware from 1826 to 1828.
U.S. Senate
In 1829, Clayton was elected to the U.S. Senate. He served as a Senator from 1829 to 1836 and again from 1845 to 1849 and from 1853 until his death.
Supreme Court of Delaware
Clayton served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Delaware from 1837 to 1839.
Secretary of State
巅峰政治生涯The peak of Clayton's political career came in 1849 when President Zachary Taylor appointed him Secretary of State.
Clayton-Bulwer Treaty
Clayton's most significant act as Secretary of State was the signing of the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty between the United States and Great Britain on April 18, 1850. The treaty prohibited both countries from colonizing independent republics in Central America and guaranteed access to a canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans that might be built in the territory of any of these republics.
Later Years and Death
After leaving the State Department, Clayton continued to serve in the U.S. Senate until his death on November 9, 1856.
