Early Life and Education
John Deutch was born on July 27, 1938, in Brussels, Belgium. He became a US citizen in 1946 and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Amherst College and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Academic Success
In 1985, Deutch became the Provost of MIT, a renowned institution known for its academic excellence. He held this position until 1990, overseeing the university's research and teaching programs.
Government Service
Deutch's career in government service spanned multiple administrations. Under President Jimmy Carter, he served as Deputy Secretary of Energy. During President George H. W. Bush's presidency, he was a member of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board.
When President Bill Clinton came into office, Deutch became Deputy Secretary of Defense in 1993 and First Deputy Secretary of Defense in 1994.
