Biography of John Malone
John Malone is an American entrepreneur and billionaire, known for his significant contributions to the telecommunications and media industries. He was born on March 7, 1941, in Milford, Connecticut.
Education
Malone obtained his education at Yale University, where he earned an honorary bachelor's degree in science and arts. He later continued his studies at Johns Hopkins University, where he obtained his doctoral degree.
Career
Malone began his career in 1963 at Bell Telephone Laboratories/AT&T, working in the department of economic planning and scientific research. In 1968, he joined McKinsey & Company and two years later became the Vice President of General Instrument Corporation (GI). He later served as the President of Jerrold Electronics, a subsidiary of General Instrument Corporation.
From 1974 to 1977, and later from 1980 to 1993, Malone served as the director of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA). Additionally, he held the position of Chief Financial Officer at a company during the late 1970s.
Currently, Malone is the Chairman of Liberty Media and the President of Discovery Holding Company. Liberty Media Corporation is a major American media conglomerate, with a significant portion of its shares owned by Malone. In 1994, Liberty Media Corporation merged with TCI, an American cable television group. Prior to the merger, Liberty Media Corporation was known as Liberty Communications Inc.
In May 2006, Time Warner acquired 50% of Liberty Media Corporation for $735 million. Malone also owns Discovery Holding Company, a holding company based in Colorado. The company holds a considerable stake in Discovery Communications, Inc (DCI) and controls entities such as Ascent Media Group, LLC and AccentHealth, LLC.
Malone is actively involved in various organizations, serving on the boards of Bank of New York, Institute, Expedia, and The Nature Conservancy. He also plays an active role in the management of Cable Television Laboratories, Inc., Chairman of Liberty Global, Inc., and DirecTV Group.
