Biography of John Paul Papanikolaou

John Paul Papanikolaou was a Greek businessman who gained the most recognition for buying and restoring the yacht owned by the Onassis family, which is now known as the 'Christina O'. He was actively involved in the maritime industry and was a friend of the Onassis family.

The Restoration of the 'Christina O'

The 'Christina O' was originally a Canadian military frigate named 'Stormont', built in 1943. After the end of World War II, Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis purchased the vessel and spent around $4 million to transform it into a luxurious yacht named 'Christina'. The yacht became a popular destination for celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Eva Peron.

It also became a gathering place for prominent figures. In 1957, John F. Kennedy and Winston Churchill met on board the 'Christina O'. The yacht had a rich history and served as a symbol of elegance and luxury.

In 1998, the 'Christina O' underwent a major renovation. 560 tons of steel hull, 56 miles of wiring, and 140 tons of pipes were replaced. This extensive work, along with the reconstruction and refurbishment of meeting spaces, was completed in 16 months. It required over 1.2 million man-hours and a budget of over $50 million. It was the most extensive renovation project in its history.

Other Acquisitions

Among Papanikolaou's notable acquisitions was the yacht of the former Yugoslav president, named 'Galeb' ('Seagull' in Serbian), which was once the third-largest yacht in the world. Today, the yacht is rented out to friends of the Papanikolaou family and to the elite circle of the rich and famous.

Legacy

John Paul Papanikolaou passed away in Athens, Greece, on February 14, 2010, after a two-year battle with cancer. He left behind a legacy of successful business ventures and his contribution to the restoration and preservation of iconic yachts, including the 'Christina O' and 'Galeb'.
