Early Life and Career as an Extreme Sportsman
John James MacMurray was born on July 28, 1984, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He moved to Los Angeles, California, and gained recognition for his extraordinary combination of freeskiing and extreme stunts. MacMurray was the first extreme athlete to successfully land a backflip over-the-rail jump.
Professional Career and Sponsorships
He began his professional career in high school, competing and filming projects internationally across North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. MacMurray appeared in extreme sports films for Matchstick, Poorboyz, Level 1, and others. His story was featured in Sports Illustrated. He owned and founded Loose Canon Productions, which released the film "Without A Cause" capturing the lifestyle of extreme sports enthusiasts. Oakley, Rossignol, Rip Curl, and Smith Optics were among his major sponsors throughout his career.
Injuries and Transition to Music
MacMurray's penchant for high-risk stunts resulted in several serious injuries. He underwent seven surgeries, including for a broken neck and two separate spinal fractures. Health issues, including a broken heel, ultimately led him to transition from the slopes to the recording studio, where he pursued rapping.
Tragic Accident and Death
On October 20, 2018, MacMurray died at the age of 34 while performing a stunt for a music video. He was on the wing of a Cessna airplane in Vernon, British Columbia, when he was blown off after the aircraft encountered a gust of wind.
"John clung to the wing with all the might until he was knocked off and his parachute had no time to open and he fell to the ground, he died instantly," said Ryan Desrochers, MacMurray's management team. The pilot managed to regain control of the plane and landed safely with no other injuries.
MacMurray's management team stated that he had been working on the project for months and had trained extensively for the stunt. He is survived by his wife, parents, and a brother.
"John's energy was infectious; he never had a bad word to say about anyone, he truly had a heart of gold," the statement added.
