Jonathan de Guzman's Early Life and Footballing Roots
Jonathan de Guzman began his footballing journey at the tender age of 12 when he joined the esteemed Feyenoord youth academy. In 1999, his talent and dedication earned him a spot in the Feyenoord first team.
Feyenoord Debut and Early Success
De Guzman made his professional debut for Feyenoord against Heerenveen. He then etched his name into club history with his first goal for the team against Willem II on September 30, 2005. His impressive performances in his first season, with 29 appearances and 4 goals, helped Feyenoord secure a third-place finish in the 2005/2006 Eredivisie.
International Choice and Debut
Born in Canada but raised in the Netherlands, De Guzman had the choice of representing either nation. In February 2008, he acquired Dutch citizenship and opted to play for the Netherlands, a decision that sparked disappointment in Canada. His older brother, Julian, chose to represent the Canadian national team.
Youth and Olympic Career
In 2008, De Guzman made his debut for the Netherlands U21 team, helping them secure a 3-0 victory against Estonia in a qualifying match for the European Championship. He also played a significant role in the Netherlands' run to the quarter-finals of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where they bowed out to the eventual gold medalists, Argentina.
Transfer to Villarreal and International Debut
In 2011, De Guzman transferred to Villarreal. He made his full international debut for the Netherlands in 2013, fulfilling a dream for both himself and his adopted nation.
