The Tragic Death of Jordan Lindsey
The AttackOn June 26, 21-year-old American student Jordan Lindsey was snorkeling in the Bahamas when she was attacked by three sharks, sustaining injuries that proved fatal. Lindsey's parents witnessed the horrific incident as the tiger sharks mauled their daughter.
The Aftermath
Despite their desperate attempts to warn her, Jordan was severely injured. Her right arm was torn off, and she sustained bites to her left arm, both legs, and buttocks. Investigators believe she was targeted by multiple sharks. Lindsey was pronounced dead at a hospital in Nassau.
The Heartbreak
"Her name was Jordan Lindsey... and we miss her dearly," said her grieving father, Jordan Michael, in a statement to NBC News. "She was such a caring soul. She loved animals of all kinds. The irony is a little bit difficult, but she died in a shark attack."
The Witness
Dr. Jace Holton, a 32-year-old Texas physician, was on the same tour boat as Lindsey and managed to photograph the shark after the attack. She explained that the group of tourists had been led to a designated snorkeling area with two guides before they were scheduled to see pigs on the other side of the island.
"About 45 minutes into our snorkel time out there, people just started kind of running up to us and saying that a girl was bit by a shark, and it was a pretty bad bite," Holton recalled.
"We couldn't see anything from our side of the island. But everybody got out of the water; everybody was pretty freaked out."
"As we were heading back to the boat, there were two small nurse sharks still circling... but there was a big one, and that was the one I sent the picture of to my brother."
The Investigation
According to Holton, several boat workers jumped into the water to assist the victim before the arrival of a rescue boat. The incident is still under investigation.
The Aftermath
The victim's family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of transporting Jordan's body back to California.
"Jordan was such a beautiful, gentle soul and she will be deeply missed," the page reads.
In less than 24 hours, over $3,000 was raised by generous donors.
"This is every family's worst nightmare. What was supposed to be fun turned into something horrible," wrote one supporter.
Ministry Statement
The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation issued a statement expressing its condolences to the family and loved ones:
"The Ministry of Tourism and Aviation, on behalf of the Government and people of The Bahamas, extends its condolences and deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the victim of a shark attack that occurred on Wednesday near Rose Island, off New Providence."
