Biography of Jordan Moody
A Life-Changing DiagnosisJordan Moody, a young British woman from Hull, East Yorkshire, was studying performing arts in New York when doctors first discovered that she had bone cancer. She decided to stay in America, undergoing chemotherapy and a surgery to remove the tumor from her thigh bone. Moody returned to England but, in 2013, while visiting her godmother in Germany, she experienced excruciating pain and ended up in the hospital. Tests revealed that the cancer had returned, and she faced the prospect of having her leg amputated.
A Unique Surgical Solution
Instead of a full amputation, doctors proposed a partial amputation followed by a rotational plastic surgery. Moody would lose her thigh bone, and specialists would use the lower part of her leg to replace the upper part, effectively creating a knee joint made from her own foot. The foot would be rotated 180 degrees to mimic the natural bend of a knee. Moody underwent the surgery at the Orthopedic Hospital in Birmingham in July 2014.
Adaptation and Recovery
Currently, Moody is in the process of adapting to life with her unique leg. She is waiting to receive a prosthetic limb, which will be attached to the joint created from her foot. Initially, seeing her new leg after the surgery was a shock for Moody, but she has now become accustomed to it. While she currently relies on a wheelchair to move around, she hopes to be walking independently again by Christmas. Moody's goal is to regain her independence and no longer rely on assistive devices like crutches or a wheelchair.
Pioneering Procedure
Dr. Lee Jeys, an orthopedic oncology surgeon at the Royal Orthopedic Hospital in Birmingham, was responsible for performing the complex procedure on Moody. He explained that Moody had received bone tumor treatment in America, which unfortunately required the complete removal of her thigh bone. Rather than leaving her without a leg, they connected her remaining shin bone to the remaining part of her thigh bone, creating a knee joint from her foot. Dr. Jeys stated that this surgical technique is performed approximately three times a year, typically on young patients. The objective of the operation is to enable patients to walk and appear completely normal in clothing. Without the prosthetic limb, the appearance may be unusual, but the goal is to preserve the best possible functionality for the patients. Most patients eventually regain the ability to walk without assistance.
Advocacy and Support
Currently, Jordan Moody is supporting the "Stand Up To Cancer" campaign, a nationwide fundraising initiative by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.
