Born in Santa Clara, Cuba on July 31, 1992, Fernandez made three attempts to leave his homeland. However, it was only the third attempt that proved successful. Rise to Stardom

In his debut season with the Miami Marlins, Fernandez was selected to participate in the MLB All-Star Game. Just a few months later, he became the recipient of the Rookie of the Month Award and the Rookie of the Year Award. Fernandez's exceptional performance showcased his incredible talent and solidified his status as one of the league's top young players.

A Challenging Journey

Fernandez's journey to success was not an easy one. His family had tried multiple times to immigrate to the United States, but it was only on the third attempt that they succeeded. Unfortunately, this journey almost cost his mother her life. During the boat crossing, his mother fell overboard, and Fernandez had to jump in after her to save her. Despite these challenges, Fernandez persevered and continued to pursue his dreams of becoming a professional baseball player.

High School and Professional Career

After arriving in the United States, Fernandez enrolled in Braulio Alonso High School and began training with Orlando Chinea, a renowned coach known for developing professional pitchers. Even in high school, Fernandez demonstrated an incredibly high level of play, leaving no doubt that he would be drafted by one of the top teams in the MLB. However, reality surpassed expectations when Fernandez signed a contract with the Florida Marlins, a team he had been a fan of since childhood.

Breakout Season and Recognitions

The 2013 season proved to be the most significant year of Fernandez's life so far. Not only did he finally have the opportunity to play for his favorite team, but his skill level had grown so significantly in just two years that fans were surprised the Marlins didn't bring him up to the major leagues sooner. In July 2013, Fernandez was named Player of the Month, but his performance in August overshadowed all previous accomplishments. He earned 49 strikeouts, pitched 39 innings, and achieved an incredible ERA of 1.15, which is exceptional for a rookie. These statistics earned him a spot among the top ten best young players of the year and solidified his name among the best young players in the history of the league.

Awards and Legacy

Fernandez's achievements did not go unnoticed. At the end of the 2013 season, he received the Rookie of the Year Award and was named the "Best Rookie of the Year" by Sporting News magazine. Fernandez also participated in the race for the Cy Young Award, although he ultimately finished in third place. In the 2014 season, Fernandez became the youngest starting pitcher in the history of the Miami Marlins.
