Biography of José Hernández

José Hernández was an Argentine poet born on November 10, 1834, in a cattle estate in the province of Buenos Aires. He is believed to be self-taught. During the civil war that began after the fall of the dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas in 1852, Hernández supported the federalists who fought for the provinces to break free from the control of Buenos Aires.

Participation in the Gaucho Rebellion

In 1872, José Hernández participated in the rebellion of the gauchos against the central government. When the rebellion was defeated, he went into exile. However, in 1874, Hernández returned to the capital and founded the federalist newspaper "Revista del Río de la Plata." He also held various government positions during this time.

Immortalizing the Gaucho in Literature

José Hernández immortalized the image of the gaucho in his famous book "El gaucho Martín Fierro" (The Gaucho Martín Fierro). The first part was published in 1872, followed by the second part in 1879. The book was written in the traditions of folkloric epic, using the language and style of the people. In the character of the protagonist, who narrates his own life, the author embodied the main traits of the gaucho's character: love of freedom, resourcefulness, resilience, courage, and spiritual integrity.

Hernández managed to bring an extraordinary artistic expressiveness to the simple language of the common people, infusing it with its inherent naive aphoristic quality. He also created impressive pictures of nature in his writing.

José Hernández passed away on October 21, 1886, in Belgrano, near Buenos Aires.
