Biography of Joseph Paxton

Joseph Paxton was an English landscape architect and engineer, known for his innovative designs and contributions to the field of architecture. He was born on August 3, 1801, in Bedfordshire, England, into a farming family. Paxton initially trained as a gardener and later worked as a head gardener and landscape artist. He also served as a business agent for the Duchess of Devonshire at Chatsworth.

Inventions and Collaborations

In 1831, Paxton invented a modular metal roof structure for greenhouses, known as the "ridge and furrow" design. He implemented this design in the construction of the Great Conservatory and the Lily House at Chatsworth in 1837. Paxton also worked on the development of parks in Birkenhead, Cheshire, in 1843. He collaborated with G.X. Stokes on architectural projects, including the Rothschild family mansion. Paxton also created numerous unrealized projects for buildings made of glass and metal.

Designing the Crystal Palace

Designing the Crystal Palace became Paxton's life's work. He began working on the project after learning that the Exhibition Committee had rejected all 233 designs submitted for the competition in April 1850. Paxton made his first sketch on June 11, 1850, after visiting the site of the future construction. By June 24, the plans were ready for the construction company. Many were astonished, and European architects were outraged that this audacious "non-architect," a mere gardener, planned to build a "glass cap" or "greenhouse" instead of a grand palace. Indeed, the palace closely resembled an orangery. Paxton drew inspiration from his experience designing large greenhouses for exotic palms, which led him to develop a simple and original solution.

Construction and Features of the Crystal Palace

The Crystal Palace project was approved by the Exhibition Committee on July 26. Preparatory work began on July 30, and construction commenced on September 26. The building was completed on February 1, 1851, just in time for the exhibition's opening. The new structure, as envisioned by the "gardener," was met with great enthusiasm by the public. The interior of the palace was filled with streams of sunlight, embodying the British people's desire for light. Paxton ensured that the ancient trees in Hyde Park, which were protected by Parliament, were not cut down. Two centuries-old chestnut trees were simply covered by the palace. The Crystal Palace utilized Paxton's innovative and refined modular structures. He compared the rigid internal framework to a table and described the roof, made of glass panels encased in wooden frames, as an intricate tablecloth.

The building employed standardized elements, with the entire structure composed of identical cells formed by 3,300 cast-iron columns of the same thickness, uniform wooden frames, and metal beams. The wooden and metal components were manufactured in different factories in Birmingham and assembled on-site in London. The construction, measuring approximately 74,400 square meters, was completed within six months. The total length of the building was around 563 meters, with the main dome reaching a height of 53 meters. Despite its architectural perfection and beauty, the Crystal Palace, with its steel structures, did not solve the problem of vaulted ceilings. The semi-circular vault in the transept had a wooden frame, and its span of 22 meters was smaller than that of many medieval structures. The Crystal Palace was a revolutionary architectural achievement, the first large-scale building constructed from glass, iron, and wood, with a framework of cast-iron and wrought-iron beams fitted with bolted joints. It marked the beginning of a new architectural style.

Legacy and Later Projects

The advent of the Crystal Palace marked a turning point in the history of architecture, as the role of the engineer-constructor became significant in determining the appearance of buildings. After the exhibition, the palace was dismantled and later reconstructed in Sydenham, South London, where it stood until a fire in 1936. In Sydenham, the Crystal Palace became a beloved and fascinating destination for countryside walks, featuring a beautiful garden and various attractions.

Paxton continued to develop his orangery principle, even applying it to urban planning. In 1854, a proposal was made for the creation of an 11.5-mile-long glass arcade surrounding London, similar to the Crystal Palace. Thus, Paxton's two projects stood at the forefront of modern glass architecture - the realized Crystal Palace and the unrealized "Great Victorian Way." Joseph Paxton passed away on June 8, 1865, leaving a lasting legacy as a visionary architect and engineer.
