Carl Friedrich Zelter: German Composer and Double Bassist
Early Life and EducationCarl Friedrich Zelter was born in 1758 in Berlin, Germany. He attended a Jesuit school and later studied theology in Breslau.
Career as a Musician
In 1779, Zelter began teaching at a Catholic school in Berlin. In 1784, he became the organist at one of Berlin's churches. In 1793, he joined the Royal Chapel as a double bassist. From 1800 onward, he conducted various opera productions.
Music Director of the Royal Theater
In 1811, Zelter was appointed music director of the Berlin Royal Theater. He held this position until his death in 1832.
Compositions and Influence
Zelter composed several operas, including "Das Incognito" (1797) and "Hans Max Giesbrecht von der Humpenburg, oder: Die neue Ritterzeit" (1815). He also wrote church and theatrical music, as well as songs. Zelter was a mentor to many young musicians, including the pianist Helene Ries.
