Joseph Paul Franklin, an American serial killer, was born in 1950 in Mobile, Alabama. Originally named James Clayton Vaughn, he changed his name to Joseph Paul Franklin in 1976, taking inspiration from the Nazi ideologue Joseph Paul Goebbels and the political figure Benjamin Franklin.

Early Life and Radicalization

Franklin had a difficult childhood, as his parents were heavy drinkers who paid little attention to him. Left to his own devices, he became fascinated with Nazi ideology as a teenager. He joined the National Socialist White People's Party and later the Ku Klux Klan, which was in decline at the time.

Blinding and Shooting Skill

Franklin became an avid shooter and achieved some success in the field. However, due to an illness, he lost sight in his right eye and nearly lost sight in his left eye, forcing him to give up his passion for shooting.

Criminal Activities and Notable Victims

Starting in the late 1970s, Franklin embarked on a criminal spree, targeting predominantly African-Americans and Jewish individuals. He launched attacks, threw Molotov cocktails into a synagogue in Tennessee, and committed a bank robbery in Wisconsin. Franklin meticulously planned each crime, changing his appearance and using police scanners to evade capture. He managed to elude authorities for about five years.

Among his victims, Franklin targeted Larry Flynt, a prominent porn publisher, who was left paralyzed after being shot. Franklin claimed that Flynt's magazine promoted interracial relationships, which he believed contradicted divine laws. Vernon Jordan Jr., a future partner of Bill Clinton, also survived an attack but sustained injuries.

Franklin's crimes were motivated by his Nazi beliefs and his desire to wage a personal war against those he deemed "inferior."

Capture and Trial

Franklin was arrested in 1980 after a nurse recognized his Nazi tattoo while collecting blood for donation in Florida. During his trial, he showed no remorse and only admitted to eight murders. He demanded to be judged by an "attractive white judge." The legal proceedings lasted from 1980 to 1997, and Franklin was ultimately convicted of 20 murders.

Imprisonment

Joseph Paul Franklin is currently serving his sentence at the Potosi Correctional Center in Mineral Point, Missouri. Despite years of incarceration, he never expressed remorse for his actions and even threatened the judicial system during court proceedings, vowing to escape and seek revenge if not sentenced to death.
