Juan Guaidó
Early Life and EducationJuan Guaidó was born into a middle-class family in Vargas, Venezuela. His father was an airline pilot, and his mother was a teacher. Two of his grandfathers served in the Venezuelan military, one as a sergeant in the National Guard and the other as a captain in the Navy.
Guaidó excelled academically, graduating from high school in 2000. In 2007, he earned an industrial engineering degree from Andrés Bello Catholic University. He later pursued further studies at George Washington University.
Political Awakening
Guaidó's political views were shaped by a devastating natural disaster in Vargas that left his family temporarily homeless. He criticized the ineffective response of the government under Hugo Chávez.
Student Activism and Party Affiliation
Guaidó joined the student political movement and became involved in the founding of the Popular Will party in 2009.
Parliamentary Career
In 2010, Guaidó was elected as an alternate deputy in the Venezuelan parliament. In 2015, he was elected to the National Assembly.
Speaker of the National Assembly
On January 5, 2019, Guaidó was elected Speaker of the National Assembly.
Self-Declared Interim President
On January 23, 2019, Guaidó invoked Article 233 of the Venezuelan Constitution and declared himself Interim President of Venezuela. This move was met with international recognition from numerous countries.
