Jude's parents were informed that their son's condition would likely confine him to a wheelchair by his early twenties. Determined to give him a better future, they embarked on a fundraising campaign to cover the £3000 cost of a life-changing surgery called selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR).
Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy
SDR involves severing select nerve roots that connect muscles to the spinal cord. This helps relax overly tight muscles, allowing for improved leg mobility. The procedure has proven effective, but funding constraints have limited its availability in the UK. With limited access and long waiting lists, Jude's family had to act quickly.
Raising Funds and Overcoming Obstacles
Jude's father, a financial consultant, expressed his son's desire for surgery: "He said, 'I really want to have this operation, I want to be able to walk better. I want to play football and score goals.'" Despite financial setbacks during the surgery at London's Portland Hospital, Jude's parents remained committed to his recovery.
A Path to Independence
Jude is currently working with physiotherapists to maximize the benefits of his surgery. The family faces additional costs of around £5000 for post-operative care. However, their determination and Jude's unwavering spirit continue to inspire them.
