Louis Marie de Mas Latrie was a renowned French historian and archeologist who dedicated his life to researching and preserving French history.

Early Life and Education

Born on October 16, 1815, in Paris, Mas Latrie was the brother of Louis Marie Cichra. He studied at the prestigious Collège Sainte-Barbe, where he was mentored by the renowned historian Jules Michelet. Inspired by Michelet, Mas Latrie developed a passion for history and went on to write a three-volume "History of Collège Sainte-Barbe" (1860-1864).

Contributions to Historical Scholarship

Mas Latrie played a pivotal role in establishing the Société de l'École des Chartes. He published numerous historical works in the society's journal, "Biblioth?que." His most significant contribution was the five-volume "Trial of the Condemnation and Rehabilitation of Joan of Arc" (1841-1849), which contained extensive historical documentation. Mas Latrie also authored works on French costume, including "History of Costume in France" (1874).

Archaeological Legacy

Mas Latrie's influence extended beyond historical research. He served as Professor of Archaeology for over three decades (1847-1878), mentoring many of the leading French archaeologists of the late 19th century. His contributions to the field earned him the title of "Father of French Archaeology."

Later Years and Legacy

After his death in 1897, Mas Latrie's unpublished works were posthumously published as "M?langes d'arch?ologie et d'histoire" (1885-1886), which included an extensive biography. His dedication to historical and archaeological scholarship has left an enduring legacy on French historiography and the study of the past.
