Biography of Édouard Lalo
Born in Lille, France, on 27 January 1823, Édouard Lalo was a renowned French violinist, conductor, and composer.
Early Life and Education
Lalo's musical talent was evident from a young age. He began studying the violin at the age of seven and later enrolled at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied under renowned violinist Delphin Alard and graduated in 1853.
National Musical Society
A dedicated advocate for contemporary French music, Lalo played an instrumental role in the establishment of the National Musical Society in 1871. Joining forces with notable musicians such as Camille Saint-Saëns, Gabriel Fauré, and Jules Massenet, he promoted the works of emerging French composers.
Conductor of the Orchestre Concert du Conservatoire
From 1885 to 1892, Lalo served as the chief conductor of the Orchestre Concert du Conservatoire de Paris. During his tenure, he conducted the premiere of César Franck's Symphony on 17 February 1889.
Composer of Consequence
Among Lalo's compositions, his Concertino for Viola and Orchestra (Op. 19, 1878) stands out as a significant contribution to the repertoire. It remains a rare example of a work specifically written for the viola in the nineteenth century.
