Early Life and Education

Julia Taymor was born on December 15, 1952, in Newton, Massachusetts. Her father was a gynecologist, and her mother was a political science professor. Taymor developed a passion for theater at a young age, attending Boston Children's Theater at the age of nine. She went on to attend boarding school, where she traveled to Sri Lanka and India through the Experiment in International Living program. In 1970, Taymor enrolled at Oberlin College in Ohio, graduating magna cum laude in 1974.

Rise to Prominence

Taymor gained recognition as a director with the 1997 Broadway musical "The Lion King," an adaptation of the Disney animated film. The show premiered in Minneapolis on July 31, 1997, and was a critical and commercial success. For her work on "The Lion King," Taymor received two Tony Awards—for direction and costume design—becoming the first woman to win a Tony Award for directing a musical.

Film Career

In 1999, Taymor released her first feature film, "Titus," an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus." She followed this up in 2002 with "Frida," a biopic about Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Both films garnered positive reviews, and "Frida" was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two for Best Makeup and Best Original Score.

Later Work and Accolades

Taymor's most recent feature film is the 2007 musical "Across the Universe," which tells the story of the 1960s through the music of The Beatles. The film starred Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood and was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. In 2008, Taymor received the Elle Magazine's Women in Hollywood Award for her work on "Across the Universe."

Personal Life

Julia Taymor has been in a relationship with composer Elliott Goldenthal for over 20 years. The couple resides in New York City.
