Julien Benneteau: A Triumphant Tennis Career
Early Success and JuniorsJulien Benneteau's professional tennis journey began in October 1998 at a Futures event in Forbach, France. In 1999, he soared to victory at the US Open and Orange Bowl junior tournaments alongside fellow Frenchman Nicolas Mahut.
ATP Breakthrough
Benetteau's first Challenger title came in Contrexéville in 2000, again partnered with Mahut. A string of Challenger victories in 2003 propelled them to two consecutive ATP Tour finals in Metz and Lyon, winning the Metz tournament over the top French pair of Llodra and Santoro. Benneteau's success landed him within the top 100 doubles players worldwide.
Grand Slam Semi-Finals and Top 50
In 2004, Benneteau and Mahut reached the semi-finals of the US Open, defeating three seeded pairs, including the renowned Bryan brothers from the US. Benneteau's remarkable performance earned him a spot in the top 50 doubles players, which was further solidified by a semi-final berth at the Paris Masters. In singles, he claimed his maiden Challenger victory in Andrezieux, reached the third round of the French Open, and made it to the fourth round of the Miami Masters, breaking into the top 100 singles players.
Continued Success and Top 20 in Doubles
The following year, Benneteau and Mahut reached the quarter-finals of the US Open and maintained their doubles ranking, while Benneteau dropped out of the top 100 singles players. However, 2006 brought a resurgence in both categories. He advanced to the quarter-finals of the French Open in both singles and doubles (with Mahut) and triumphed in the Lyon doubles tournament. Notably, he defeated three top 10 players in singles, propelling him to a career-high ranking of 40.
In 2007, Benneteau excelled in doubles, reaching the semi-finals of the US Open and the quarter-finals of the Australian Open (both with Mahut) and the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters (with Richard Gasquet). By September, he had ascended to a career-high ranking of 22nd in doubles.
ATP Finals in Singles
2008 marked Benneteau's two first-ever ATP finals in singles, including a win over two top 20 players en route to the final in Lyon. He also defeated world number five David Ferrer in Auckland, New Zealand. In doubles, he partnered with Mahut for much of the year, but his most significant triumph came with Llodra, with whom he won the Las Vegas tournament, defeating the Bryan brothers in the final.
Masters Victory and Wimbledon Run
Benneteau continued his success in 2009, winning two doubles tournaments: the Shanghai Masters with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the Lyon tournament for the second time with Mahut. In singles, he secured seven consecutive wins to reach the final of the Kitzbühel tournament in Austria after three rounds of qualifying. At the Paris Masters, he upset world number one Roger Federer in the second round before losing to fellow Frenchman Gaël Monfils.
Partnerships and Davis Cup
From 2010, Benneteau primarily partnered with Michaël Llodra, winning the Marseille tournament and reaching the third Masters final of his career in Toronto. In singles, he finished runner-up at the Marseille tournament, defeating Tsonga in the semi-final, and reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, where Tsonga avenged his earlier defeat. Benneteau also helped France overcome reigning champions Spain in the Davis Cup quarterfinals, beating Feliciano Lopez.
