Julie-Adèle-Anaïs de Pène

Early Life and Marriage

Born into a physician's family, French writer Julie-Adèle-Anaïs de Pène embarked on a literary path. In 1852, she married Dr. Messin.

Second Marriage and Salon

Following the demise of her first husband in 1868, de Pène wed Antoine Edmond Adam, a prominent prefect of police and senator. She hosted a renowned salon, frequented by influential figures of the republican persuasion.

Literary Achievements

In 1879, de Pène established the journal Nouvelle Revue, a platform for her literary and political views. She staunchly advocated for revanchism, a policy of retribution against Germany after the Franco-Prussian War, and criticized German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck.

Scandalous Publications

De Pène is credited as a contributor to the controversial book series published under the pseudonym "Count Paul Vasili." These works became the subject of much speculation and scandal.
