Julius Deutsch: Austrian Politician and Leader of the Schutzbund
Assistant Secretary for Military AffairsIn November 1918, Julius Deutsch was appointed Assistant Secretary for Military Affairs. In March 1919, he became State Secretary for Military Affairs, a position he held until October 1920.
Organizer of the Republican Schutzbund
In 1923, Deutsch became the primary organizer and leader of the Republican Schutzbund, a paramilitary organization established to counter the Christian Social Heimwehr. The Schutzbund formed a significant component of the German-Austrian Volkswehr.
Suppression and Exile
After the Nazis seized power, Deutsch's book "Wehrmacht and Social Democracy" was burned. Following the Schutzbund's defeat in the 1934 civil war and the subsequent ban on the Social Democratic Workers' Party, Deutsch fled to Brno.
Civil War in Spain
From 1936 to 1939, Deutsch served as a general in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War.
Exile and Return
In 1939, Deutsch settled in Paris, where he worked for the Austrian Socialist Party's foreign office. Following the German occupation of France, fearing reprisals due to his Jewish heritage, he emigrated to the United States. In 1946, he returned to Austria, where he led the Socialist Party's publishing house until 1951.
Personal Life and Legacy
In 1951, Deutsch married the writer Adrienne Thomas. After his death, the house he lived in at Grinzinger Allee 54 was named the Julius-Deutsch-Hof in his honor.
Gustav Deutsch
