Early Life and InfluencesBorn on August 7, 1942, in the state of Bahia, Caetano Veloso was inspired by the success of his sister, singer Maria Bethânia, to move to Rio de Janeiro in the mid-1960s. He began writing and performing music that drew from the traditional bossa nova of João Gilberto, while also incorporating influences from Bob Dylan's American folk-rock and art-rock.
Tropicália and Political Exile
Veloso became a leading figure in the tropicalia movement alongside Gilberto Gil. Their performances, which incorporated elements of traditional Brazilian music with rock and roll, were seen as a threat by Brazil's military junta. After a provocative joint concert, both musicians were exiled to London in 1969, where they lived for two years.
Return to Brazil and Continued Success
Upon returning to Brazil, Veloso resumed his active concert career. His performances became a hallmark of contemporary Brazilian music, blending elements of popular culture, social commentary, and experimentation. He continued to receive numerous accolades, including multiple Latin Grammy Awards.
International Recognition
In the late 20th century, Veloso released an album dedicated to the memory of Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina. He was invited to perform at the Academy Awards after appearing in Pedro Almodóvar's film "Talk to Her." In 2004, Veloso released his first English-language album, "Foreign Sound," featuring his interpretations of classic pop standards.
