Kai Greene: Bodybuilder, Artist, Actor

Early Life and Bodybuilding Beginnings

Kai Greene was born on July 12, 1975, in Brooklyn, New York. Due to a troubled family environment, he was placed in the foster care system as a child, experiencing frequent moves and changing adoptive parents. To cope with his unstable surroundings, Kai turned to bodybuilding. His impressive physique was recognized in high school, prompting his coaches to encourage him to compete. As he recalls, "Knowing that there was an opportunity to excel past my peers and shine with a beautiful physique, I took to bodybuilding like a duck to water, quickly outgrowing the normal parameters and standards of my age group."

Professional Bodybuilding Career

In 1997, Kai attempted to qualify for a pro card within the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB) but realized he needed to build his credentials through the National Physique Committee (NPC). Determined to earn his pro status via the Amateur World Championship, he trained tirelessly. In 1999, Kai Greene was invited to the World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia. After placing fourth in the competition, he took a four-year break from bodybuilding. In 2004, Kai Greene announced his return to the sport and traveled to New York City for the Tribeca Performing Arts Center show. In August of that year, he unanimously won the heavyweight division, securing his professional status. In 2016, he claimed victory in the Arnold Classic's Open category, earning a $130,000 prize. As of 2016, Greene has been crowned the Arnold Classic champion three times.

Acting Career

Greene made his acting debut as a male stripper in the 2015 comedy film "College Debts." In November 2016, he traveled to the Chinese province of Guizhou to begin filming a martial arts movie titled "Fist of Fury," scheduled for release in 2018. He plays a villain who battles the protagonist in an opening-scene arena fight. In January 2017, it was announced that Greene had signed with the Gersh agency and would appear as the character "Funshine" in the second season of Netflix's science fiction series "Stranger Things."

Artistic Expression

Beyond bodybuilding, Greene is an avid artist who often creates self-portraits to aid in building and maintaining his ideal physique. In August 2011, he showcased his artwork to the public, stating at the exhibition, "As a professional bodybuilder, I am a sculptor first. The art show was an opportunity for me to realize that I've been an artist all along; my medium has been the human physique. My life is what I make it, just like the art I create on canvas and on stage. This art show makes that statement. It marks some personal milestones and my own artistic expression."
