Background

Kallam Anji Reddy was born and raised in the village of Tadepalli on the banks of the Krishna River, where his father was a turmeric farmer. He completed his schooling in his hometown and then pursued a Bachelor's degree in Science, which he obtained in 1958.

Education and Early Career

Reddy went on to study at the University of Mumbai, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy and Chemistry. He later completed a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry in 1969. He began his career with the government-owned Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited from 1969–1975. Subsequently, Reddy joined Uniloids Ltd. as a General Manager from 1976–1980.

Founding Dr Reddy's Labs

In 1980, Reddy founded Standard Organics Limited. Four years later, he established Dr Reddy's Labs, a company that revolutionized the Indian pharmaceutical industry by making India self-sufficient in drug production and enabling the export of pharmaceuticals.

Innovation and Expansion

Reddy's labs launched India's first new drug research program in 1993. The company achieved significant success, becoming the first non-Japanese Asian pharmaceutical company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange in April 2001. By 2006, it generated revenues of $546 million. Reddy generously supported charitable causes through various trusts, some of which he established himself.

Legacy and Demise

Despite the remarkable progress made by his company, Reddy remained determined to conquer the challenges posed by certain diseases. One such disease ultimately claimed his life when he passed away on March 15, 2013, at a hospital in Hyderabad due to complications from liver cancer.
