American model with amputated limbs
Karen Crespo, an American model from Los Angeles, became known as the "mannequin woman" after losing all four limbs due to meningitis and undergoing extensive reconstructive surgeries. At the age of 32, Karen survived a severe case of bacterial meningitis, which caused the amputation of her limbs, nose, and upper lip. Her chances of survival were only 10%, but she not only managed to overcome the odds but also became an inspiration for others facing similar situations.
A life-changing illness
In 2011, Karen was diagnosed with meningococcemia, a severe form of bacterial meningitis that affects the brain and spinal cord. The deadly infection was so aggressive that Karen lost her upper lip, nose, and a portion of her right ear, which eventually grew back with the help of reconstructive surgery. She also underwent extensive skin grafting on almost every part of her body.
A long road to recovery
After spending five months in the intensive care unit, Karen moved in with her mother, Evelyn, who had to leave her job to become her full-time caregiver. Fortunately, Karen's medical insurance covered the cost of her four prosthetic limbs, which amounted to an astonishing $180,000. However, she had to wait for a year before receiving her new limbs and reducing the size of her scar tissue.
Adapting to a new life
Karen admits that adjusting to her new life with prosthetic limbs hasn't been easy. Despite her incredible progress, she still faces challenges and fears going to a grocery store alone, as she may require assistance at any moment. Her prosthetic limbs weigh almost 13kg, and even simple tasks require double the effort. However, she is grateful for the independence her prosthetic limbs have given her and continues to push herself to do more than she ever imagined.
Becoming a model and an inspiration
Before her illness, Karen had a passion for fashion and always wore high heels, except when she was in her nursing uniform. This passion led her to pursue a career in modeling after receiving her prosthetic limbs. She made her debut as the "first full amputee model" to walk the runway at New York Fashion Week. Karen wants to be an inspiration for others, just as she lacked inspiration when she first became disabled. She often refers to herself as a "mannequin woman" and hopes to continue giving motivational speeches and helping others in the future.
A future of possibilities
Due to her medical condition, Karen is currently unable to return to her nursing job. However, she plans to regain her independence by saving up enough money to purchase a modified car that will allow her to drive again. She has already started giving motivational speeches and hopes to continue making a positive impact on others. Despite the difficulties she faces, Karen remains determined and optimistic about what the future holds for her.
