Early Life and Amateur Career
Karen Tonakanyan was born on July 2, 1992, in Yerevan, Armenia. His amateur boxing career began in 2014, when he won the bronze medal at the Armenian National Championships. In 2015, 2016, and 2021, he claimed three national titles.
International Success
Tonakanyan represented Armenia at various international competitions. In 2017, he reached the quarterfinals of the European Championships in Kharkiv, Ukraine. At the World Championships in Hamburg, Germany, the same year, he lost in the round of 16.
In 2019, Tonakanyan won a bronze medal at the European Games in Minsk, Belarus. He was aiming to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but was surpassed by fellow Armenian boxer Oganes Bachkov in the national team.
Transition to the Professional Ranks
After the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his amateur career, Tonakanyan turned professional in 2020. He made his debut in Moscow, Russia, with a second-round TKO victory over Andrey Isaev.
Recent Professional Performances
Tonakanyan's professional record stands at 343rd in the BoxRec rankings (as of December 2022). He competed in two professional fights in 2021, facing tough opposition in Sofiane Oumiha. On December 11, 2022, Tonakanyan lost a unanimous decision to Oumiha in the final of the IBA Pro Series Champions' Night in Abu Dhabi.
Tonakanyan continues to compete at the lightweight and light welterweight divisions, aiming to ascend the professional boxing ranks and represent his country with distinction.
