Early Life and Naval Career

Carl Hans Wachtmeister was born in Stockholm on June 15, 1682, to Lieutenant General Blekert Wachtmeister and Barbara Kristina Wulffrat. He entered the Swedish navy in 1697, rising to the rank of lieutenant in 1698. In 1702, he became a drabant, but continued serving in the navy and was appointed Admiralty Captain.

Orford Ness Battle

In 1704, Wachtmeister sailed as a passenger aboard the ship "Öland," commanded by Gustaf Psilander, during its famous battle against an English squadron at Orford Ness. The Swedish victory was a significant achievement during the Great Northern War.

Command of the Baltic Fleet

Wachtmeister's naval career continued to advance, and in 1712, he became a rear admiral. In 1715, he was promoted to vice admiral and given command of a squadron of 4 ships of the line, 3 frigates, an artillery pram, a brigantine, and 50 skär boats. He was tasked with patrolling the Gulf of Bothnia and defending Sweden's eastern coast.

Admiral and Admiralty Counselor

In 1715, Wachtmeister was promoted to admiral and appointed Admiralty Counselor. He played a key role in the development and expansion of the Swedish navy. He proposed the construction of a dock, which was approved by the king with a funding of 60,000 silver dalers.

Head of the Admiralty College

From August 1727, Wachtmeister served as the head of the Admiralty College, responsible for the administration of the Swedish navy. He held this position until his death in 1746.

Personal Life

Wachtmeister was married to Beata Jaquette Ribbing. He was ennobled as a baron in 1719, becoming one of the most prominent military and naval officers in Swedish history.
