Early Life and Education

Born in Altona, Germany, Karl Gottfried Semper was the brother of noted entomologist Georg Semper. He pursued studies in natural sciences, including zoology, at the University of Würzburg. His academic journey marked the beginning of a remarkable career as a zoologist and traveler.

Exploration of the Philippines

In 1858, Semper embarked on an expedition to the Philippine Islands, where he remained until 1861. His extensive research during this period yielded valuable insights into the region's diverse fauna. He also visited neighboring islands such as Palau (1862) and Mindanao (1864).
