Early Life and Education
Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz was born into a noble family in the Polish countryside in 1885. He attended гимназии in Bereżany and Lwów before enrolling in Lwów University. However, financial difficulties forced him to abandon his studies.
Career Beginnings
Witkiewicz worked as a German teacher, stenographer, and journalist before moving to Kraków in 1908. There, he collaborated with the democratic newspaper "Nowa Reforma." After World War I, he settled in Warsaw and ran the stenographic bureau of the Sejm.
Literary Criticism and Journalism
Witkiewicz became a prominent literary critic, contributing to various literary journals in Warsaw. He wrote theatrical reviews for "Robotnik" and was an editor of the newspaper "Europa." In 1933, he was elected a member of the Polish Academy of Literature.
Fiction and Drama
During the "Young Poland" era, Witkiewicz gained attention with his novels "The Deck" (1904) and "Maria Dunin's Dreams" (1903). "The Deck" explored the psychological conflicts between conscious and subconscious motives, coining the term "deckism."
Film Theory and Chess
Witkiewicz was also a pioneering film theorist and an accomplished chess player. He wrote extensively about the cinematic medium and its psychological effects.
World War II and Death
During World War II, Witkiewicz remained in Warsaw and was wounded during the Warsaw Uprising. He was hospitalized in Żyrardów but died in 1939 from an infection.
Legacy
Witkiewicz's work encompassed literature, film theory, and psychology. He left behind a rich and influential legacy, inspiring generations of artists and academics. His writings continue to be studied and appreciated for their psychological insights and innovative approaches to art.
