Early Life and Career in FootballKarol Zalewski began his athletic journey in the city of Olsztyn, playing as a defender in a local football team. However, he eventually decided to switch to track and field, seeking greater control over his performance and less reliance on teammates.
Versatility and Success on Multiple Distances
From an early age, Zalewski exhibited exceptional versatility as a sprinter. While his primary focus became the 200-meter dash, he also excelled in the 400 meters. As a result, he often found himself competing in three events at major competitions, including the 200 meters, 4x100-meter relay, and 4x400-meter relay.
Breaking Records and Winning Championships
In 2012, Zalewski made his mark on the international stage at the World Junior Championships. He set a Polish junior record of 20.54 seconds in the 200 meters and earned a silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay. The following year, he stunned spectators by defeating the favored Pavel Maslak of the Czech Republic in the 200 meters at the European Athletics Junior Championships. He successfully defended his title in 2015.
Success with the Polish National Team
Zalewski's contributions to the Polish national team are significant. In 2015, he helped his team secure a silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay at the European Athletics Indoor Championships with a national record time of 3:02.97. He also represented Poland in the finals of the European Athletics Championships in the 200 meters and 4x100-meter relay.
Olympic Glory and Continued Strides
Zalewski made his Olympic debut in 2016, competing in the 200 meters but failing to advance beyond the preliminary rounds. However, his ultimate triumph came at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where he clinched the gold medal in the 4x400-meter mixed relay. He continues to train at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn under the guidance of coach Zbigniew Ludwichowski.
