Katharina Spiering was born in 1974 in East Berlin, directly on the border with West Berlin. Her father, a physicist, was invited to work in Dubna, near Moscow. Spiering spent her early childhood in Russia, learning some Russian. However, her family returned to East Germany when she was young.
