Early Life and Opera CareerKathleen Howard, a Canadian-American mezzo-soprano opera singer, was born on July 27, 1884, in Clifton, Ontario. She spent her childhood in Buffalo, New York, and began her opera career by the early 1900s. In 1918, Howard made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera, performing the role of Zita in Giacomo Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi." She also performed in opera houses in Metz, Germany, and Darmstadt, Germany, before the outbreak of World War I.
From Opera to the Silver Screen
After the war, Howard moved into the film industry, making her debut in 1934's "It's a Gift." Her unique comic timing and ability to portray irascible and nagging characters made her a memorable presence in many Hollywood comedies. She starred alongside W.C. Fields in three films: "It's a Gift," "You're Telling Me!," and "Man on the Flying Trapeze."
Hollywood Stardom and Recognition
