An American Woman with Lipedema
Battling a Rare and Debilitating ConditionKatya Page, a 36-year-old bride-to-be from New Jersey, has been facing an agonizing ordeal with her legs, which have swollen to an astonishing 48 inches in circumference due to a rare chronic condition called lipedema. This disease leads to the abnormal accumulation of fat tissue in the lower body.

Seeking Relief Through Surgery
In an attempt to halt the relentless growth of her legs, Page has undergone a series of liposuction procedures, despite the fact that surgery cannot remove significant amounts of the affected fat. "Before surgery, my legs measured between 50 and 54 inches," Page said. While the liposuction has led to some reduction in swelling, Dr. Lizzie Gottsegen, who performed the procedures, noted that Page still has a long and challenging road ahead.

Lack of Awareness and Understanding
"Many therapists and doctors still don't know about lipedema," said Gottsegen. "Without surgery, compression garments, and staying mobile, this could have ended deadly very quickly." Page added, "My legs cascaded all the way down to the end of my feet, and it got really bad at one point."
Facing Discrimination and Embracing Hope
Despite the challenges she faces, Page has refused to give up on her dream wedding. "I'm intelligent, educated, I can cook," she said. "I'm a catch! You're an idiot if you don't like me." Page's unwavering spirit has not been dampened by the negative comments and judgment she encounters from people who assume her weight gain is due to poor diet rather than a life-threatening illness.
A Past of Struggle and a Future of Hope
Page was diagnosed with stage four lipedema a year ago. By that time, her legs had reached a circumference of 48 inches. "It's been a gradual thing since I was seven, but it went crazy in my late teens," she said. "Now, it's full-blown, and I can see it. There are days when I can't do anything because it's so painful."
Support and Motivation
Page's godmother, Diana Mendheim, believes that Page's upcoming wedding is a significant milestone and encourages her goddaughter to stay positive and set new goals. "She's been through so much. She needs to know that somebody cares and that she's a priority," Mendheim said.
Ongoing Treatment and Future Outlook
Page had previously undergone another round of liposuction with Dr. David Groiner, but the procedure was halted prematurely due to excessive blood loss. "She probably needs 10 to 12 procedures to really make a dent in this. It's going to take three to four years to get her somewhere that's acceptable," Groiner said. "But I'm relatively pleased that we've made the progress that we have, given the enormity of the task." Groiner believes that with Page's determination and positive mindset, she can return to the state of well-being she enjoyed 15 years ago. "I just want to live my life, and I want to have a long life. Nobody wants to get married and then have their spouse become a widow," Page said. "I still manage to enjoy my life, even with this."
A Story of Courage and Perseverance
Page's journey with lipedema was featured in the TLC program "My Legs Won't Stop Growing" on July 25, 2016. Her story is a powerful reminder of the courage and determination that can triumph over adversity.
