Thirty-one-year-old Kayleigh Gilbert was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells in the bone marrow. Determined to fight the disease, she underwent eight months of aggressive chemotherapy. However, this treatment came with a devastating side effect: doctors informed her that her chances of conceiving naturally were virtually zero.

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)
AML is a cancer that starts in the immature white blood cells called myeloblasts. The bone marrow produces these cells, which eventually mature into healthy white blood cells. In AML, the myeloblasts do not develop properly, leading to their rapid multiplication and accumulation in the bone marrow. These abnormal cells can then spread to other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes and spleen.
AML is a relatively rare disease, affecting approximately 2,900 people in the United Kingdom each year. It is more common in older adults, especially those over 65 years of age. Fortunately, treatment for AML is generally effective for most people diagnosed with the condition.
