Early Life and Career
Keiji Inafune, a renowned Japanese video game artist and producer at Capcom, was born on May 8, 1965, in Osaka, Japan. After graduating from high school, he pursued his passion for art and attended the Naniwa Art College.
Joining Capcom
In 1987, at the age of 22, Inafune joined Capcom as an illustrator. His first significant project was "Street Fighter," which became a worldwide phenomenon and launched a popular fighting game franchise. As a graphic designer, Inafune also worked on "Mega Man 2."
Creation of Mega Man
Capcom recognized the growing popularity of family gaming computers, particularly Famicom by Nintendo. The company aimed to create a flagship franchise for this platform. In 1987, Inafune became the lead artist for the development of "Rockman," the Japanese title for what would become known as Mega Man in North America.
Mega Man's Design
Inafune was solely responsible for the illustrations, concept art, and pixel graphics of Mega Man. He designed the game's logo, cover art, and instruction manual. The character's iconic blue color earned him the nickname "Blue Bomber." Influenced by Japanese animation and popular characters like Mario, Inafune created a visually striking protagonist.
Departure from Capcom
On October 31, 2010, Inafune announced his departure from Capcom. After a successful career spanning over two decades, he left to pursue independent projects, including the development of the "Mighty No. 9" video game.
