The Creation of APL
Iverson conceived the idea for APL in the late 1950s while working at Harvard University. The APL interpreter was implemented on various platforms, including the world's first personal computer, the IBM 5100, which was created by IBM in 1974. The IBM 5100 had a 32 KB RAM and used a cassette tape recorder for external program and file storage. The computer's built-in 5-inch monitor, along with the APL-oriented keyboard, was incorporated into the system, giving it a weight of approximately 20 kg. However, due to its high price tag of around $15,000, the IBM 5100 did not achieve widespread popularity.
J - APL's Successor
In the 1990s, Iverson developed a version of APL called J, which had a more concise syntax using the classical ANSI character set for command notation. J was a continuation of Iverson's work in creating powerful and efficient programming languages.
Recognitions and Awards
Throughout his career, Kenneth Eugene Iverson received several prestigious awards for his contributions to the field of computing. In 1970, he was named an IBM Fellow, recognizing his outstanding achievements while working at IBM. In 1975, he was honored with the Harry H. Goode Memorial Award by the IEEE Computer Society.
