Kenneth D. Lewis: A Banking Titan
Early Life and EducationKenneth D. Lewis was born on April 9, 1947. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Georgia State University and later pursued an executive program at Stanford University.
Career at Bank of America
After graduating in 1969, Lewis joined North Carolina National Bank (NCNB) as a credit analyst. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming head of both domestic and international divisions. When NCNB merged with Bank of America in 1998, Lewis became its CEO, President, and Chairman.
Leadership and Recognition
Under Lewis's leadership, Bank of America became the largest bank in the United States. In 2001, US Banker named Lewis "Banker of the Year" and included him among its "Top CEOs." By 2007, Time magazine recognized him as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World."
Philanthropy and Civic Involvement
Beyond his banking career, Lewis has been actively involved in various philanthropic and civic organizations. He is a member of the Financial Services Roundtable and Financial Services Forum, as well as the board of directors and executive committee of United Way of Central Carolinas. He has also served as Chairman of the National Urban League.
The Merrill Lynch Acquisition
During the 2008 financial crisis, Lewis orchestrated the $50 billion acquisition of investment bank Merrill Lynch. However, Merrill Lynch's $28 billion losses in 2008, along with $3 billion in bonuses paid to Merrill Lynch executives, became liabilities for Bank of America.
Controversy and Resignation
Lewis's handling of the Merrill Lynch deal drew scrutiny from regulators, leading to an ongoing investigation into Bank of America's management. On April 29, 2009, Bank of America shareholders voted to remove Lewis as the company's Chairman, although he remained as President and CEO. On September 30, 2009, Lewis announced his retirement, vowing to step down by December 31, 2009.
