Early Life and Political Formation
Kieren Keke, a Nauruan politician and medical professional, was born on July 27, 1971, in Yaren, Nauru. As a co-founder of the Naoero Amo political party, he established himself in Nauruan politics, becoming a member of the Nauru Parliament and holding ministerial positions in health, foreign affairs, sports, and tourism.
Political Career with Naoero Amo
In the 2003 parliamentary elections, Keke, David Adeang, and Riddell Akua led Naoero Amo to secure three of the 18 parliamentary seats. The party formed a coalition with Ludwig Scotty's supporters, resulting in Keke's appointment as Minister of Health, Sports, and Transport under Scotty's presidency.
Legal Challenges and Ministerial Resignations
In 2004, Keke faced allegations of dual citizenship (Nauruan and Australian), which legally disqualified him from parliamentary membership. Following these allegations, he resigned from government in 2007 with Frederick Pitcher and Roland Kun, citing dissatisfaction with presidential policies. Keke assumed the role of Leader of the Opposition to Scotty on November 13, 2007.
Government under Marcus Stephen
Keke's cousin, Marcus Stephen, replaced Ludwig Scotty as President on December 19, 2007. Keke was appointed Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Assistant to the President.
Parliamentary Exclusion Attempt and Emergency Rule
In 2008, then-Speaker of Parliament David Adeang attempted to exclude Keke from parliament, leading to a parliamentary session that passed a law prohibiting dual citizenship for members. Keke and Frederick Pitcher, who also held Australian citizenship, were not invited to the session. President Marcus Stephen subsequently declared a state of emergency on April 18, dissolved parliament, and called for new elections. Keke was re-elected and became a leading member of the government.
Government under Sprent Dabwido
Sprent Dabwido became President of Nauru on November 15, 2013. Keke initially opposed Dabwido's presidency but later rejoined the government in 2012 when Dabwido dismissed his cabinet and appointed opposition members. Keke resumed his positions as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Health, and Sports. At the 2012 UN Climate Change Conference, Keke represented the Alliance of Small Island States and criticized the conference's outcome as "words without action." He resigned unexpectedly from all ministerial positions on February 7, 2013.
Continued Parliamentary Representation
Keke was re-elected to parliament in the 2013 elections, representing the Yaren constituency.
