Kiki Bertens: A Rising Star in Dutch Tennis
Kiki Bertens is a Dutch tennis player who has soared to prominence in the WTA rankings, achieving a career-high singles ranking of 41st. She is currently the highest-ranked Dutch female tennis player.
Early Career and Breakthrough
Bertens began her 2012 season at the Australian Open, where she defeated Vesna Dolonts in the first round before falling to Olga Savchuk. Despite a first-round retirement at the ITF tournament in Andrezieux-Boutheon due to a hip injury, she made an impressive showing in the Fed Cup, teaming up with Demi Schuurs to defeat Barbara Luz and Margarida Moura and competing in singles against Eva Paalma.
In February, Bertens reached the qualifying rounds of the WTA tournament in Acapulco, defeating Ana Paula de la Peña but losing to Sesil Karatantcheva. She then claimed her second ITF championship in Irapuato, Mexico, triumphing over Yaroslava Shvedova.
WTA Success
Bertens' WTA breakthrough came at the tournament in Fes, Morocco, where she defeated Intissar Rassif and Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino in qualifying. In the final, she stunned Urszula Radwańska, becoming the first Dutch player since Michaella Krajicek to win a WTA title.
At the French Open, Bertens advanced to her first Grand Slam main draw, defeating Annika Beck, Olga Puchkova, and Madalina Gojnea in the qualifying rounds. She made her Wimbledon debut the following month, defeating Lucie Safarova in the first round before losing to Shvedova in the second.
Recent Performances
Bertens had a mixed run of results after Wimbledon, but found success at the Montreal tournament, where she upset Nadia Petrova in the first round. She then reached the second round of the Cincinnati tournament before falling in the first round of the US Open.
