Biography of Kim Cattrall

Early Life and Education

Kim Victoria Cattrall was born on August 21, 1956, in Mossley Hill, Liverpool, United Kingdom. Her father, Dennis Cattrall, worked in construction, and her mother, Gladys Shane, was a homemaker. Kim was the only child in the family, and when she was just three months old, they immigrated to Courtney, Canada, where she spent her childhood. At the age of 11, Kim returned to the UK with her parents. During their five-year stay, she attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. At the age of sixteen, Cattrall briefly returned to Canada to obtain her high school diploma, after which she immediately went to New York to pursue an acting career. She became a student at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and impressed Austrian-American director Otto Preminger, who noticed her after completing her studies.

Early Career and Recognition

Kim's debut in the film industry was in Preminger's adventure drama "Rosebud" in a small role, which did not gain much attention from the public. However, this debut served as a stepping stone for her career development. Despite numerous roles in second-rate TV shows and movies, she struggled to gain popularity. Her breakthrough in the big screen came with her role as Cadet Karen Thompson in the comedy "Police Academy" in 1984, which became a sensation in America and worldwide. Although her character did not appear in the sequel released a year later, she received significant roles in films such as "Turk 182" and "Mannequin" in 1985 and 1987, respectively, which garnered critical acclaim. In 1991, she portrayed Lieutenant Valeris in the science fiction action film "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country."

Sex and the City

Parallel to her film and TV roles, Cattrall performed in theater productions, applying the knowledge and acting skills she acquired at the academies in London and New York. Notable theatrical works by Kim include Arthur Miller's "A View from the Bridge" and Anton Chekhov's "Three Sisters." However, her career took a major turn in 1997 when she, along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon, auditioned for the leading roles in the HBO TV series "Sex and the City." Cattrall landed the role of the sexually liberated PR executive Samantha Jones, the oldest of the four main characters, who openly discusses intimate topics. Kim embraced the role of the extravagant diva perfectly and received a nomination for the prestigious Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or TV Film. She was nominated for this award in subsequent years but won it only once in 2003.

Later Career and Personal Life

The success of "Sex and the City" can be easily explained as it was the first show or film to openly explore the thoughts of mature women. This made it immensely popular among the female audience. The actresses playing the main roles in "Sex and the City" instantly became A-list stars. The global community paid attention to Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, and Kim Cattrall, showing interest in both their acting careers and personal lives. The actresses took full advantage of their acquired fame. Kim Cattrall appeared in a Pepsi commercial and signed a contract to write a book about sex. She published two literary works, "Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm" and "Sexual Intelligence," with the first book co-written with her then-husband Mark Levinson in 2001. Cattrall's personal life is as eventful as the life of her "Sex and the City" character, Samantha Jones. She has been officially married three times to Larry Davis, Andre J. Lyson, and Mark Levinson. She was also engaged to actor Daniel Benzali and had relationships with former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, basketball player Cuttino Mobley, actor Alexander Siddig, and chef Alan Wyse. Despite announcing their wedding in 2007, Cattrall and Wyse broke up due to the significant age difference of over twenty years.

Recent Years

All the films in which Kim Cattrall and her "Sex and the City" co-stars appeared were either filmed simultaneously with the TV series or after its conclusion, but none of them brought the actresses the same level of fame. However, when the full-length feature film adaptation of the beloved TV series, titled "Sex and the City," was released in 2008, it became a new breakthrough in Cattrall's career and the ensemble cast. The film and its sequel, released in 2010, were not as memorable and vibrant as the series, but loyal fans of the show were delighted to see their favorite characters back on the big screen, despite feeling that something was missing.

Kim Cattrall

Currently, there is a lull in Kim Cattrall's career, even though she is one of those responsible for the immense popularity of "Sex and the City." However, there have been hints from Sarah Jessica Parker about the possibility of creating another full-length film about the adventures of the four unstoppable and very attractive ladies. This suggests that Cattrall's quiet period may not last long.
