Biography of Kim Deal

Kimberly Ann Deal, known as Kim Deal, is an American rock singer, songwriter, and musician. She was born on June 10, 1961, in Dayton, Ohio, in a family of a physicist who worked at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Alongside her twin sister Kelly, they were passionate about music from an early age. At the age of 11, Kim learned to play the acoustic guitar and performed the song "King of the Road" by Roger Miller.

Early Life and Musical Career

In school, Kim was a leader and often found herself in conflict with the school administration due to her behavior, although her academic achievements and involvement in sports activities earned her forgiveness. As a teenager, Kim formed the folk-rock band The Breeders with her sister Kelly. Initially, Kim struggled with songwriting, but with experience, her creativity improved.

After finishing school, Kim attended seven different colleges but did not complete any of them. She had an interest in biology and completed a small course in the subject, working in various laboratories for several years.

Joining The Pixies and The Breeders

In 1985, Kim saw an advertisement in the Boston Phoenix newspaper looking for a bassist for a rock band influenced by Husker Du and Peter, Paul & Mary. She responded to the ad and attended the audition, despite never having played bass before. Kim borrowed a guitar from Charles Thompson, and after performing a few songs, she joined The Pixies.

While working with The Pixies, Kim also continued her project with The Breeders. However, she faced conflicts with Charles Thompson, the frontman of The Pixies, as she wanted to include her own songs in the band's repertoire. Eventually, Kim decided to focus solely on The Breeders and invited Tanya Donelly from Throwing Muses and Josephine Wiggs from Perfect Disaster to join the band.

The Breeders' Success

The Breeders released their first album, "Pod," in the summer of 1990. The album was recorded in Scotland with producer Steve Albini, who had also worked with The Pixies. The band gained popularity and achieved success with hits such as "Cannonball," "Divine Hammer," and "Saints." In 1993, Kim's sister Kelly joined The Breeders, and their second album, "Last Splash," became a platinum record.

Although Kelly's struggles with heroin addiction led to her entering a rehabilitation clinic in 1994, Kim kept The Breeders together. Despite their unofficial hiatus, Kim collaborated with The Amps and Guided by Voices during the following years.

Later Years

In 2004, The Pixies reunited, and Kim participated in their North American tour. In 2008, The Breeders released their album "Mountain Battles," marking their comeback. Kim Deal's talent and contributions to the rock music scene have solidified her as a respected figure in the industry.
