Childhood and Early Life
Kim Nam Gil was born on March 13, 1980, in Seoul, South Korea. He is not the only child in his family; he has a brother. As a child, Kim attended Han Yeong High School. While in school, he actively participated in sports, music, and dance. Despite having many interests, Kim chose to pursue acting and enrolled in Myeong Ji College's theater department.
Acting Career
Kim Nam Gil made his television debut in 1999, playing a minor role in the youth drama "School 1." He continued his acting career in 2003, initially using the stage name Lee Han to avoid confusion with another actor of a similar name, Kam Nam Gil. Kim quickly gained recognition on television, appearing in dramas such as "Be Strong, Geum Soon!" (2005), "Goodbye Solitude" (2006), and "Lovers" (2007).
Kim's first feature film role came in 2004 with the action movie "Furious Years." In 2006, he starred in the controversial film "No Regret," portraying a homosexual character. The film received mixed reactions in Korea but achieved record-breaking box office success for an independent project. "No Regret" was also screened in the Panorama section at the 57th Berlin Film Festival and at the Asian Cinema Festival in Barcelona.
The turning point in Kim's career came with his role as Bidam in the 2009 drama "Queen Seondeok," inspired by the legends of Korea's first reigning queen. Kim's character became a fan favorite, and the writers expanded his screen time and created a love line for him with the protagonist, despite it being absent in the original legend. Following the success of "Queen Seondeok," Kim received numerous offers for new projects.
Breakthrough with "Shameless"
In 2015, Kim starred in the thriller "Shameless," which premiered in the "Un Certain Regard" section at the Cannes Film Festival. Kim described his work on the film as a transformative experience that significantly impacted his career. Among his notable works is his lead role in the 2019 comedy-drama "The Fiery Priest." The show was a huge success with audiences and became one of the highest-rated Korean dramas of the year. Kim then took a hiatus from television before returning to the small screen in "Those Who Read Hearts of Evil" (2022).
Beyond Acting
In addition to his acting career, Kim is also known in Korea as an author. He published an autobiographical book with his own photographs titled "Way Back to the Road" in 2012. In 2022, Kim released "CUP vol.1: How Personal Taste Inspires," a collection of interviews with nine notable individuals, focusing on creativity and inspiration. He has also recorded songs for the soundtracks of dramas such as "Queen Seondeok" and "Empress Ki," as well as a cover of Japanese singer Koji Tamaki's "Roman."

Kim Nam Gil keeps his personal life private. Fans have speculated about his relationships with co-stars, but none of these rumors have been confirmed. Kim has admitted to dating women older than him and values caring and supportive qualities in a partner. Kim continues to star in both films and television shows. On May 9, 2024, the horror film "Bogeyman: Realm of the Dead" was released in Russia, featuring Kim in a lead role. Based on the 2020 film "The Closet," the story revolves around an architect whose young daughter goes missing. Kim plays a mysterious figure who helps the father search for his daughter and communicate with supernatural beings.
