Early Life and Education

Mette Hegnhøj was born in 1965 in Risskov, a suburb of Aarhus, Denmark. She attended Risskov Gymnasium, graduating in 1984. From 1989 to 1991, she studied at the Copenhagen School of Writers.

Literary Career

Hegnhøj's literary debut came with the 1992 poetry collection "Mellem tænderne" ("Between Teeth") and the 1993 novel "Vera Winkelvir." She has also authored the children's book "Chokoladeeskapade" ("Chocolate Escapade") in 1998 and several video films.

Writing Style

Two key characteristics define Hegnhøj's writing: her refined grotesque black humor and her predilection for the diary style as a literary form. This combination reveals deeply personal emotions that, despite seeming private, are universally shared: the longing for understanding and the struggles with self-perception.

Awards and Recognition

Hegnhøj has been recognized for her work by the Danish Academy, receiving both the Klaus Rifbjerg Debut Poetry Prize and the Beatrice Prize established by Bente and P. Beckett. She has also won the BG Bank's Book of the Year Prize and the Danish Bank Literary Prize.

Notable Publication

"En dræbe i havet" ("A Kill in the Sea") (2008) explores the disparities between the developed and developing worlds. When the protagonist experiences the harsh realities of hunger through the magical Room 516 at Copenhagen's Hotel Astor, her comfortable existence is shattered. The novel offers a satirical portrayal of privilege and a poignant commentary on global inequality.

Other Works

Vera Winkelvir (1993)
Bannister (1996)
Bruger De ord i kaffen (2001)
Fra småhullet (2004)
