Life and Early Education

Galen was born in Pergamon, Asia Minor, in 129 AD into a wealthy Greek family. His father, Nicon, was a prominent architect, and Galen was destined to follow in his footsteps. However, his passion lay elsewhere, and he began studying philosophy, medicine, and other natural sciences.

Extensive Travels and Medical Experience

To further his medical knowledge, Galen embarked on a series of travels. He visited many cities, including Corinth, Smyrna, and Alexandria, where he sought out the leading scholars and practitioners of the time. He observed and assisted in gladiatorial contests, providing medical aid to the wounded fighters.

Court Physician to the Emperor

In 164 AD, Galen moved to Rome and became the personal physician to Emperor Marcus Aurelius. After Aurelius's death, he served as court physician to his successor, Commodus. His influence in the imperial court allowed him to conduct extensive research and develop his medical theories.

Galenic Physiology

Galen proposed a complex physiological system based on the concept of pneumas (spirits) and humors. He believed in three types of pneumas: natural, which originates in the liver and circulates through the veins; animal, which originates in the heart and circulates through the arteries; and psychic, which originates in the brain and circulates through the nerves. As for humors, he identified four: phlegm, yellow bile, black bile, and blood.

Contributions to Neurophysiology

Galen's investigations into the central nervous system were groundbreaking. Through experiments involving the ligation of nerves, he demonstrated the relationship between nerves and sensation. He also theorized that the brain might be the seat of thought.

Individual Variations

Galen noted that individuals exhibit variations in temperament and susceptibility to disease. He observed that women with a melancholic temperament were more prone to cancer than those with a sanguine temperament. This observation laid the groundwork for understanding individual differences in health.
